Typhoon #28 off the south coast of Honshu 台風 紀伊半島

Riding the "Ocean West" ferry from Tokushima to Tokyo, we ran into some really good waves off the Kii Peninsula. The restaurant closed and I had to eat Japanese "ice cream" out of the vending machine for dinner. Immediately after getting this shot they announced that everyone was supposed to stay inside. All the Japanese were inside already and slightly green, so I guess they were being polite. I was on the lee side and against the bulkhead enjoying the ride. Occasionally, you could feel the "thump, thump, thump" when the prop came out of the water and started slapping the top of the waves.

When I have time I always take a ferry in Japan. Typhoons (taifu) are an added benefit as long as they stay small.

Taken with an Olympus XA and Fujichrome 100.
