Plant bug phallus

Christine Johnson, an entomologist and curatorial associate in the Museum’s Division of Invertebrate Zoology, uses a confocal microscope to observe otherwise imperceptible differences among various species of plant bugs, for example the elaborately feathered genitalia of the males. Using these observations, she was able to refine the classification of these animals.
