The Dickinsons of Amherst
The family of poet Emily Dickinson was closely tied to Amherst College from its very origins. Her grandfather, Samuel Fowler Dickinson, was one of the founders of the College. Her father, Edward Dickinson, served as College Treasurer from 1835 until 1873. Her brother, William Austin Dickinson, graduated in the class of 1850 and took over as College Treasurer after his father stepped down. Emily Dickinson's nephew, Edward "Ned" Dickinson, worked as an Assistant Librarian at the College.
