Bangladesh Cyclone Preparedness Program

Mafiza Begum spent seven days at sea holding on to the carcass of a floating cow after a cyclone destroyed every thing she had, including the life of her 5 month old daughter and 30 of her family members. Miraculously she survived, and wishing for no one to ever experience her tragic loss, she became a volunteer with the Bangladesh Red Crescent’s Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP). As a volunteer, she alerts her local community of upcoming dangers, directing them to evacuation centers and demonstrating how to be prepared, often riding on the back of motorcycles and bicycles to reach the more remote neighbors. “If I had gone to a shelter, I would not have lost my daughter,” Mafiza says. “I want people to learn from my life.”
