Hurricane sandy 2012

November 7, 2012, Staten Island, New York. John Kalmby stands in front of a Red Cross emergency response vehicle in Staten Island holding three no-heat hot meals handed out by Red Cross volunteer Gina Mazza. John’s house used to be in South Beach on the infamous Doty Avenue, the street where an off-duty police officer, Arthur Kasprzak, was tragically electrocuted and killed in his own home during Hurricane Sandy. John’s house is completely gone after Sandy and he has lost everything. He said the storm surge from Sandy that overtook his neighborhood was 12 feet high. The Red Cross piled him high with drinks and food to last him through the night. Photo by Talia Frenkel/American Red Cross.
