Memorial showing the old slave market Stonetown Zanzibar
Under the Omani empire rule Zanzibar was a major port for the slave trade. Being on the east of africa these slaves were taken to persian and other arab countries not to North America. In a nearby house there is a heartbreaking room underground where up to 70 slaves were kept in horrendous conditions awaiting sale. The slave trade officially ended here in the mid 1800s but it is said to have continued in secret until 1911!
