Castleman Portfolio - Giant River Otter
Locals once smoked Giant River Otters from their dens, harvesting their belts for Brazilian specialty leather crafts. Karanambu Ranch takes in orphans. “We’re seeing considerable recovery,” says the resort’s fifth-generation owner Diane McTurk. “Last year they were considering taking them off the endangered species list.”
Philip and Bella, the current crop of otters, are just one year old and four feet long (they may max out at 6ft). They’re grumpier than most resident animals, who often swim with the ranch’s guests.
