Down the Isthmus towards the University and the West side of town. If you look closely you can see my house, at least where it would be if you could see through the trees. Lake Mendota is frozen. I am not sure what is causing the patterns maybe they are "lake circles"?

It had been warming up, so all the shanties had been removed (little huts on the ice for ice fishing). That is a surreal image to some, but just another Wisconsin winter for those of us who have lived here long enough.

Hi alumroot: this is a great view of Mendota that most of us don't see. Please consider adding it to Wisconsin Waters (you don't have to join to add yoru photo).

Lake Mendota's Ice cracks are the crevasses created by the expanding Ice pressure. These crevasses are precarious to cross as you speed skate (or Ice Boat) across the 9 by 5 mile lake. They create a beautiful sound as they build in the night. Like Sheboygan's fog horn, yet unpredictable. This lake is the reason why the greatest speed skaters in the world come from Madison.
