Strand, London, 1 August 1955
This is facing east towards Fleet Street. The road off camera to the right leads to Waterloo Bridge, and Aldwych goes off to the left almost opposite. The building with the cupola was once the Gaiety Theatre, which closed in 1939 and was demolished in 1956 for redevelopment, the building on the site later becoming a branch of Citibank and later still a luxury hotel. On 14 June 2011 a major fire broke out at this site.
This and many other of my photographs are featured in my book "London, Portrait of a City, 1950 to 1962" (Allan Hailstone, publ. Amberley Publishing), together with the story of how I came to photograph them and my memories of past London.
