Endless Columns

The details on the MCS are amazing, especially considering that they were placed where most people would never see them. It was done simply for the sake of art.

This is excellent! The perspective is great, especially in the large version. I love the details - the egg-and-dart at the top of the columns - purely for the aesthetic. You don't see that any more. Sigh.........

Michigan Central Station looks awesome. Maybe one day I'll get to come to Detroit and do some exploring.

impressive! how old is it? are there any plans to bring the station back to life?

The Michigan Central Depot opened in 1913. It closed in January 1987, as Amtrak decided that the station was too large for their operations, and too costly to maintain. It went through many owners, until it ended up in the hands of local businessman Manny Moroun. Manny owns the Ambassador Bridge, as well as the train station and a large amount of land in Southwest Detroit. No viable plans have surfaced for the building. There was talk of turning it into the police department headquarters, but that proved unfeasible. So the station still sits. It faces probably demolition, since any renovation would cost a minimum of $200 million, and maybe as much as $400 million.

You likely couldn't hire the tradesmen to replicate it today.
