Wentworth Woodhouse panorama
This is the baroque part of the house, the original building with the Palladian front looming behind. This is the private residence of the current owners and so is not on the tours. The main building has been used extensively recently for films and TV programmes, the large rooms, general dilapidation and ability to build sets in the rooms has been invaluable.
After the war the National Coal Board mined right up to within 16 feet of the house - open-cast pits for very low quality coal. The compensation for subsidence is going to be more than the coal was worth.
Updated for 2108: now the whole house is in possession of a Conservation Trust but they need millions to carry out essential maintenance. There may still be some compensation due from the Government as the old National Coal Board mining operations caused huge damage.
