The government and its president Yoseri Museveni are responsible for years of persecution and hate crimes. In February 2014 Museveni signed into a law an act increasing the penalties against gay people, with punishment set at life in prison for LGBT individuals who continue to commit the "offence of homosexuality".
On 19 April 2018 LGBT protesters gathered in London to protest the refusal of the Commonwealth Conference to deal with the issue of laws across most member countries criminalizing gay rights. According to human rights activist Peter Tatchell, half of all such countries in the world are in the Commonwealth.
