nooner and pheasant...
this is the first picture i've been able to get of june with her pheasant. this is a hand-me-down from alice, but for some reason june developed a strong attachment to it when she was really little. it has always been in her kennel with her at the hospital. i took her to dog daycare one day last summer when she was really young, and i was trying to find a solution to her sleeping all day while i worked and then being awake, screaming all night. i brought along her bed, a chewie, and this pheasant. when i went to pick her up, the staff said that she played and played all morning, and then when it was time to go in the puppy room for a nap she crawled in her bed and laid down, but was shifting and turning and not quite settled. then she got up, ran over to where pheasant was laying on the other side of the room, and dragged it back into bed with her and snuggled down with it in her mouth and fell asleep. of course, at the time june was very tiny and pheasant was fully stuffed and much larger than he is now. that was back when she was maybe nine weeks old or so. she only went the one day because it just didn't work out with their hours and my work schedule. i'm glad she did go the one day though, i think it helped her to learn that sometimes she could be away from mom and it would be okay and she wouldn't die and mom would come back.
somewhere along the way she got mad and killed pheasant and pulled his guts out. but she still loves him. whenever she's sad or mopey, she trudges back to her kennel and gets on her cot and puts pheasant in her mouth and turns to face the wall and just lays there. haven't got a picture of that yet, but she does it quite often. we call her "emo-dog."
today she was being emo because i gave her a bath. because she rolled in a rotten dead eel at the river. and i finally had my phone handy to get a snapshot.
