The Gates of Hell (Aareschlucht selfie 2)

This is another selfie from my Aareschlucht series, shot in the wonderful gorge of the river Aare, near Meiringen in Switzerland, mostly to show the scale, since there was no one else around at that time.

This is one of the narrowest and most spectacular places in the gorge, so narrow actually that you can stretch out your hands and touch the other side! There are some huge rock walls hanging above your head (a bit uncomfortable this one…) and the whole big river is flowing fast in a slot below (the milky thing shown here), so you can imagine how deep (and wide at the bottom) this slot must be.

This photo was taken at night time, but having visited there many times in daylight too, I can assure you that at this spot and a few others too, the gorge is so deep and narrow that it’s always pretty dark.

The red lights along with the out-of-this-world appearance of the narrows, reminded me of something like the Gates of Hell, hence the name of the photo.
