STOP THE EU CORPORATE TRADE AGENDA
Seattle-to-Brussels (S2B)* and its members, especially CEO, organized a protest action on Oct. 28th in front of the DG Trade building, where BusinessEurope held its birthday conference "Going global", which mainly aimed at promoting its strategy to deepen and push forward the Global Strategy according to big business's interests. As a matter of fact no place for environment neither for decent work within the business strategy. No place for civil society nor trade unions. But a whole range of Commissioners and high level DG representatives as speakers. In two words the EU Commission is all ears to the Business priorities. Business as usual but one step further. The Business is welcome within the Commission buildings! Hand in hand. True love that S2B decide to act as a wedding ceremony between the Commission and the Big Business. The priest is bribed. Champaign inside. Protestors away. No other voice to say “we do not agree with that against-nature wedding”. Wedding is consumed. The show must go on… all is for trade, whatever the consequences for poor people/countries and environment. This protest action ask the Commission to end this privileged capture of the trade agenda by the Corporate and urges the same Commission to start focusing on respect of environment and decent work within its trade strategy. At the same time the new research from Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) "Global Europe: An Open Door Policy For Big Business Lobbyists At DG Trade" reveals the close involvement (privileged access in the preparations of the new strategy, exclusive meetings with the former Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and top officials from DG Trade...) of the European employers' federation, BusinessEurope, in drawing up the Global Europe trade strategy**.
