Green Gold: Miner silhouette

Tadó - Chocó - Colombia.

While I was documenting the work of a group of Afro-descendents "Green Gold" miners in the Bioregion of Chocó Colombia, I found this young man with his pan, as an icon that represents the commitment of this people with an environmental and social responsible exploitation of precious metals.

Surrounded by a mega diverse rainforest, the miners that have worked here since colonial times use traditional mining practices that don’t pollute the ecosystem with chemicals or cause massive deforestation as the illegal and large mining companies do.

Since the year 2000, around 200 families from Chocó have joined Oro Verde® (Green Gold®), a pilot initiative created by a group of Colombian professionals and local leaders that differentiates responsibly mined gold and platinum so they can be sold as green and fair metals in specialized market niches; thus improving miners’ access to global markets and their livelihood.
