Amtrak's Champion includes an Illinois Central EMD E-8 locomotive # 4038, coupled to the departing train at the SCL-Amtrak (former ACL) station in Saint Petersburg, Florida, during 1973. The IC E-8 locomotive is quite dirty with many chips in the paint presenting a worn out look. During the early days of Amtrak, called the Rainbow Era, many locomotives and cars were still wearing their original owners paint schemes. The Rainbow Era made for many interesting and colorful trains around the system.
