Tottenham Green - desire line

People choose desire lines as a direct route to their destination - here it's a bus stop (middle of the photo) . If the "path" made by their footprints is clearly visible other people tend to follow it. Left unmanaged, trampling by many feet flattens and can eventually kill the vegetation. The new path widens.

 

Between the laid-out paths and the desire path, this corner of Tottenham Green was sliced into triangles. Near the bus stop it had become a bank of packed mud.

 

Poor park management.
