Sugarloaf Mountain - view to east from FIre Lookout

This is the view from the Sugarloaf Mountain Summitl looking east. You can see the Echo Canyon Trailhead in midframe and the road up to the Massai Point Trailhead. The area to the eas of Chiricahua National Monument was hit hard by the fire.

The Horseshoe II fire roared through the Chiricahua Wilderness in June, 2011. Much of the wilderness area was devastated by the fire an the floods that came with the 2011 monsoon. Valiant efforts saved much of the Chiricahua National Monument. The western 2/3's to 3/4's of CNM was saved by back fires and suppression efforts. The eastern 1/4 to 1/3 was hit hard but hit spotty. It always amazes me how a wildland fire can scorch an area with intense heat, but completely spare a couple of acres right next to it.
