Century Plants - Mountain in background

    Newer Older

These varieties of Century Plant grow for about 15-20 years before sending up flower spike like this and then they die. This is a species of agave cactus.

"Flowers. . . are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world." Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is Mt. Ord in the Mazatzal Wilderness in the Tonto National Forest on the way to Payson. The Mount Ord turn-off is at MP 222 on the Beeline Highway (AZ 87). This is in the old burn area about 1/2 way up. Pronounced Maht-a-zal. The Mazatzals are an incredible wilderness between Phoenix and Payson.

I like this. Are those burn marks from the big fire three or so years ago?

I wish I could keep track of the damn fires in these parts. This was not the Willow Fire - that was west of Highway 87 and burned the Barnhardt Trail area and is probably the fire that you are thinking about. This looked to be about 4-6 years ago from the stumps and the regrowth. Just Northwest of Mount Ord. Maybe 1,000 acres. This was not the Cave Creek Complex fire that burned about 250,000 acres north of Carefree. That was 2 years ago now and was up the Seven Springs area and west of Humboldt Mountain. About 20 (?) miles to the west. This is a great mountain biking trek if you bike. Not a particularly exciting hike without a camera.

Very cool info. My girlfriend was telling me about a different plant that does something similar, but I forgot what it was.
