sauta cave, lower section, sauta cave national wildlife refuge, jackson county, alabama, dan calhoun (usgs) 2
We were working under a permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to enter lower Sauta Cave. Were were sampling salamanders for evidence of the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis that causes this chytrid disease. We couldn't enter the cave until the gray bat (Myotis grisescens) flight concluded which was not until 2130 CDT. This is our water quality sampling site. Dan is collecting water quality field parameters: water temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, and percent dissolved oxygen.
