Fire Assay

The wild orange glow of the melts is mesmerizing often forming slowly moving patterns as they cool. I’ve tried to photograph them before (point and shoot method on automatic) but just get orange fuzz. I finally decided that the camera just cant focus on the intense heat source (they come out of the ovens at 1950 to 2200 degrees. Putting the camera into full manual allowed me to finally get some decent shots of hot stuff

The melts are poured out in to a tray of conical molds. What you see on top is the molten glass. The metals fall out to a bead in the tip of the cone.

Graela, I didn't know you did this, you little smelter you.

You know what they say "The smelter is the feller." No wait thats not quite it.

It is a borrowed hobby. The equipment is all my dad's, but I sure like to play along. We almost always run some batches over thanksgiving weekend. Then offer to do a turkey for 15 minutes at 2200.

This photo is one of my Favorites. I like the intense color and the feeling that you would get burned if you touched it. It is a great subject also. The photo is well composed.

Excellent picture of a pour. You must work as a fire assayer. I work in this area as well.
