    The color gradient here was caused by oil being present on the aperture blades. The viscosity of the oil slowed down the aperture just enough that it was still closing as the shutter was moving across. So the image ended up being exposed from a range of approximately f/8 to f/16. A fortunate mishap, as the image turned out quite nicely.
