Barack O'Lantern

My largest pumpkin carving endeavor ever. I took the Shepard Fairey designed poster, put it in CS, made it 3 shades in B&W and resized it to 8x10. Used carbon paper to etch the pattern onto the pumpkin, then used an exacto knife(man i wish i had dremel tool) and carved the 3 layers to make the pattern. Total time 8hr..... Going to take more pics of it once it gets dark out, i just did this semi ok one for now.

Another pic of the pumpkin here at dusk, that shows a bit more carving details:

And for reference, here is the original artwork by Shepard Fairey:

*Update* After getting on digg's frontpage, and having tons of requests for a stencil, I have added one to my flickr account for anyone wishing to take a stab at doing this

pumpkin: (and since my flickr account is set to private, which im not changing, ive put the stencil on photobucket for anyone wanting it in full size:

Next up, Shepard Fairey's "Change" poster. should be done with it later this week, just finishing up the stencil now, then its off to finding a good pumpkin for it.

Just put it someplace it won't get smashed, y'hear? It would be rough to have that happen to such an awesome pumpkin.
  • Fixie&Boxie 7y

    Nicely done!
  • Brandy Connor 7y

this is awesome! you should also check out the pumpkins at
  • James Dierx 7y

Is there anyway you can stop the pumpkin from decaying? it's amazing.. put it in the freezer :D
  • Kirill Kireyev 7y

So how did you carve different layers? From the inside of the pumpkin?

(I'm not from this country, so pretty new to the art of pumpkin carving..) Great work though!

Nice i got dugg, is a nice change of pace from being a top digger digging other stuff, to finally having something i did get dugg.

    Now to answer questions:

@misscellania: Yep, i submitted it to yeswecarve, hoping to win that Ipod nano(sure hope its not orange though)

@Zenodata: after how many people seem to be liking it, i think i will add the stencil here on flickr. Along with the Shepard Fairey "Change" stencil im just about finished with(will be carving it soon)

@Jdierx: I use petroleum jelly to help preserve the pumpkin. Coating every exposed part with a thin layer. It tends to extend pumpkin life in my climate at least(seattle) for about a week longer than without it.

@kkireyev: I carve it from the outside, basically just cutting at it and smoothing it out with an exacto knife. The real trick, is to start with the deeper parts, and then do the middle depth, then polish it up after you have rough estimates done.

    Absolutely brilliant!!!

Awesome! I want the desktop wallpaper! :)

For the deep parts, how deep are you actually going in to the pumpkin? Half way in? Almost all the way in?
  • Mark Johnson 7y

@Jackprominski: i go about 60-75% into the wall of the pumpkin for the deep parts. Then the middle layer, i do about half of the depth of the deep cuts.

having trouble accessing the stencil. private?

great job btw. very, very cool
  • Mark Johnson 7y

@dii15, i just realized that myself. I can't seem to find a way to allow a single photo to be viewed full size without giving access to all my stuff on flickr in full size. Which is something i do not want to do. So, i've put it up on photobucket for anyone wanting it:

Wow. Your pumpkin kicks my pumkin's ass.

Any chance you'd post a high resolution version of this picture? I would love to use it as the desktop wallpaper on my work computer for the next couple of weeks.

I used your stencil to make my own Barack O' Lantern. After attempting this, I have even more respect for your pumpkin.

    Thanks for the stencil.
