Bottlecap Gazebo; Blinded by the Light

Playa dust is not the only aspect of nature that is a challenge at Burning Man. Black Rock Desert has an average high temperature of about 90 degrees F, and at 4,000 feet the sun can be brutal. The best times for photography are an hour on each side of sunset and sunrise.

Midday is a good time to catch up on sleep, but unless you have some good shade it is impossible to get good rest. Many "burners" set up tents under larger shade structures. My daytime tent setup left lots to be desired.

Mutual adversity helps cement the community, and makes us feel that we are all in this together. It was quite clear to me that the social experience of Burning Man would not happen in a tropical paradise.
