2014 Council 5 Convention
Nearly 600 delegates to Council 5’s 10th anniversary convention in Bloomington overwhelmingly approved the FIVE FOR THE FIGHT per capita increase. The $5 a month increase gives AFSCME Minnesota the resources to continue fighting against the relentless corporate and right-wing attacks on public services, and to continue to fight for a better Minnesota for all workers.
In speeches from Gov. Mark Dayton, from AFSCME International president Lee Saunders, and from Milwaukee County AFSCME director Boyd McCamish, delegates learned from firsthand accounts about what’s at stake in the Nov. 4 elections. They heard the stark differences between being a public employee in Minnesota vs. Scott Walker’s Wisconsin, and what’s at risk if tea party extremists defeat Dayton or win a majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Among other convention action, delegates also:
•Donated $10,721.63 – and counting – to the food shelf at Neighbors Inc.
•Elected 9 new members to two-year terms on the Executive Board, and re-elected 33 board members.
