Vikalp works for the equitable distribution of resources and opportunities between different genders, classes, castes, and regions. Vikalp seeks the recognition of women as equal productive and reproductive individuals, and lobbies to increase women’s accessibility to choices, social justice, health, education, and livelihood. Vikalp means ‘alternative’ in Hindi and Gujarati.

Vikalp Women’s group formed in 1996 to combat domestic violence and discrimination against women in Gujarat. The organization has an all-female Board of Trustees, which includes the founder and director, Indira Pathak, and program director Maya Sharma.
