SATIIM ranger Anasario Cal

Cal is part of the Toledo Cacao Growers Association, in Southern Belize. He grows cacao organically in his yard and on a plantation, for the chocolate bar label Green & Black. He is also a park ranger for the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM). SATIIM's five rangers patrol and monitor the 42,000-acre Sarstoon Temash National Park. Each ranger comes from an indigenous (Mayan or Garifuna) village on the edge of the park, and each conducts daily patrols individually, as well as bi-weekly 3-day excursions by boat and foot. Cal lives in Crique Sarco, on the Temash River, and conducts patrols by canoe. The rangers look for and respond to threats like illegal hunting, plant harvesting, and logging, and monitor activities like oil exploration.
