WAP calls for an end to child marriage
Students march with the Woman Advocacy Project (WAP) to call for an end to child marriage as part of the "Give Us Books Not Husbands" campaign. The event had over 400 participants and took place on Africa Day (May 25, 2018) in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Child marriage has well documented consequences for girl's health, safety, education, and lifelong ability to realize a range of essential human rights. According to the latest data from UNICEF, 32% of girls in Zimbabwe marry by age 18, and 4% marry by age 15. WAP's "Give Us Books Not Husbands" campaign works to empower and support girls to avoid early or forced marriages, stay in school, and decide for themselves whether and when to marry.
