Found on one of my rambles. The mother bird tried to lead me away, coming close and faking the broken wing, then leading me away from her nest. I didn't want to cause her any undue distress, so I stopped just quickly enough to snap a couple of photos.
Ground nesting birds always make me worry a bit - the eggs and chicks are just there - for any predator to seize upon. I once had a nest such as this one in my pasture. The horses stayed away from it, but every day or two, one of the eggs would be missing until finally there were none left. Makes me feel sorry for the poor bird parents. Evidently enough of them survive to keep the species going because we do see a fair number of kildeer around here.
