Winnowing the Grain

Here, the woman on the left empties a basket of grain, while the one on the right uses an ingenious fan to blow the chaff away from the grains as they fall. The grain, being heavier than the chaff, will land in a more-or-less chaffless pile on the mat.


This photo is from an album my spouse's uncle compiled in Japan between 1914 and 1918.


While Uncle Elstner did a good job of annotating the photos, he did not date them. For that reason, all I can do is say the photos were taken between 1914 and 1918.
