Irwandi Yusuf (born 2 August 1960 in Bireuën, Aceh, Indonesia)is currently the Governor of Aceh. Governor Yusuf was formally installed as Aceh’s first democratically elected Governor on 8 February 2007. In addition to being designated as the Senior Representative to the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) from 2005 (immediately after the signing of the Helsinki Peace Accord 15 August 2005) until AMM’s departure December 2006, Governor Yusuf played a key role in the Helsinki peace talks between the Government of Indonesia and Free Aceh Movement (GAM). From 1999 through 2001, Governor Yusuf worked for Fauna and Flora International (FFI) and was instrumental in initiating actions that established FFI’s presence in Aceh. He was also a Field Officer for the International Committee of the Red Cross based in Aceh from 2000 to 2001. Governor Yusuf served two years (2003 – 2004) in Banda Aceh’s prison as a POW, his sentenced shortened as a result of the devastating earthquake and tsunami of December 2004. From 1998 until his arrest in 2003, Governor Yusuf held various positions within GAM, including coordinator for GAM negotiators in Aceh both pre- and during cessation of hostilities (CoHA) in 2000; and served as GAM”s military adviser. Since 1989 Governor Yusuf has been a lecturer at Banda Aceh’s University of Syiah Kuala’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He remains a faculty member with reduced teaching responsibilities. Governor Yusuf holds a Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon (1990-1993) and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh (1979-1987). In addition, Governor Yusuf in 1988 attended veterinary surgery training at Gajah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Governor Yusuf’s priorities include stimulating outside investment, employment generation; environmental concerns and tackling the pressing issues of GAM reintegration. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency (BRR) for Aceh-Nias and has overall responsibility of the newly re-structured Aceh Reintegration Peace Agency (BRA) securing and sustaining the peace process. Governor Yusuf is married to Darwati A. Gani; they have five children, one boy and four girls.
