Just back from our annual trip to Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, NY for the Winter Empire State Games. Stina competes in ski-orienteering and won a gold medal this year! Yay!
This year's ice palace in Saranac Lake was the best one we've ever seen! I suspect the organizational meeting went something like this.
A: I think we should build a big castle!
B: I think we should build a maze that people can go through and find their way out!
C: I think we should build a pirate ship!
D: I think we should build a barn/shed/Starbucks (we're not sure what it was)!
E: Great ideas! We've got tons of ice! Let's make them all!
They kind of went nuts, really. The maze was pretty amazing and even had a kid-sized shortcut tunnel through one part. All of it is made from giant blocks of ice that are harvested out of the lake. The blocks you see in the picture are approximately 2ft tall, 3 feet long and 2 feet wide. There are multi-colored spotlights all over the place, and at night it's quite bright!
In any case, here's the ice pirate ship. More to come.
