....... this special young man is the son of very great friends of ours and he has Downs Syndrome.
The cake decorators amongst you are undoubtedly aware that Lorraine (extra icing - Aine2) has a gorgeous little grandson Daniel, who also has Downs Syndrome.
Lorraine has just set up a new group Upside Downs flickr.com/groups/upsidedowns/ ...... great name! ...... to highlight the positive side of having a Downs child and is in the process of getting it off the ground.
Knowing I have known Rupert for all his life (he's now 31) she asked me to join the group and if possible to post pictures of Rupert and to recount his achievements and milestones. This I am delighted and proud to do and Rupert's parents were equally delighted to give me photographs to post ...... hence this one of him in Flaine skiing.
So, over the next few months I shall be posting the odd photo of him but I will also be writing in the Group about Rupert's achievements and exploits ......... and believe me there are many on both accounts ......... and some are hilarious! Probably his biggest achievement (so far!) has been when he won our town's "Young Achiever of the Year" award last year.
So if you know of anyone who has a Downs child who might like to join this group please tell them about it ....... or maybe you might like to dip into it from time to time yourself to check on little Daniel's progress or see what Rupert's latest adventure is!
I'm sure many parents must have felt when they had a Downs child that it was the end of the world ...... but it doesn't have to be ...... it's a very different world, yes ..... one probably with some tears ..... but one definitely filled with a great deal of love and laughter and so rewarding. And it's this positive side Lorraine wants to show.
Rupert is a fine young man with a great sense of humour, impeccable manners, a great love of life and totally non-judgemental.
I often think we could learn a great deal from him.
I hope you will enjoy the group as it gets established over the next few months!
