Thank you all for your kind comments! I hope you had as much pleasure watching this and other Uzbekistan photos as I had taking them. I was particularly lucky with the weather and clearly this trip was above and beyond expectations.

The story behind this picture is my group was being driven back from Samarqand to Tashkent and we had to stop on the side of the road to let the engine cool down for a little while.

It was about noon so the sun was really high in the sky and the sandy desert we were going through made for a good background. I crossed my finger to see a Lada Zhiguli passing by to make a "postal card" picture as I like them.

While many of those cars were replaced in Russia with the economic boom in the 2000s, you still find many of the Lada Zhiguli models in Uzbekistan and they are usually in a fairly good state thanks to the hot & dry climate of the country. It is one of those elements that still relate to the USSR and the pre-1991 period which will slowly disappear over time -- you can already see a number of Daewoo or Chevrolet models replacing them.

This photo was taken with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM, one of the two lenses I took alongside my wide angle EF-S 10-22 for this trip (and a EOS 7D body). I was very happy with the combination.

      Thank you :-)

I had a Zhiguli during my years in Moscow. A yellow one. A great and strong car that lead me to many places. I visited Ouzbékistan too, beautiful Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, Urgentsch, Taschkent... Wonderful memories. Thanks for your pictures.

Looks like pretty nice country with lots of photo ops. Somewhat reminiscent of the Dempster Highway. Nice shot.

Cette photo décrit parfaitement l'état d'un pays encore à la recherche de son identité moderne après la domination soviétique. Il offre des paysages vierges de tout développement industriel mais pour combien de temps encore !
