Day 81/365. Pillars of Islam-5/5. Zakat.

Day 81. 16/09/2010

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is mandatory for muslims who are financially solvent.

The word Zakat means both 'purification' and 'growth'. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a proportion for those in need, and, like the pruning of plants, this cutting back balances and encourages new growth.

Zakat is the amount of money that every adult, mentally stable, free, and financially able Muslim, male and female, has to pay to support specific categories people.

It is 2.5% of the annual earnings {plus jewellery possesions(silver and gold)].

The idea is to give the money to somebody who can use that amount to change his life for the better, and in the process become independent financially so that he/she/family doesn't need to be financially dependent on others from the coming year. That way, more and more poor people can become financially stable.

So stop keeping all your money for yourself, spend in the way of God. Remember its him that has destined you to get it in the first place. And you shall get complete justice on the Day of Resurrection.
