Eastern Tiger Swallowtail -- Papilio Glaucus
An absolutely glorious day, in which I found myself wandering a bit farther and longer than usual, also found the butterflies harvesting the newly emerging flowers with vigor...here a patch of Devil's Paintbrush (Hieracium aurantiacum) undergoes the taste test. I believe I saw more swallowtails yesterday than I have in previous years combined...and far more accomodating to posing, though I did ask nicely.
Trivia Tidbit: the first known drawing of a North America butterfly was that of an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. It was drawn by John White in 1587 during Sir Walter Raleigh's third expedition to Virginia.
[Much better large]
