Created in 1969 to protect endemic species that inhabit it, Simien National Park is listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO.

The gelada baboon, a specie of the park, is encountered in large numbers. Although the males sport magnificient leonine manes, their most striking physical feature is the bare patch of skin on their chest. This has given rise to their other popular name : “the bleeding heart baboon”.
