Annual salmon festival underway in Port Alberni
The 41st annual Port Alberni Salmon Festival is underway with a $10,000 top prize for the largest salmon. But the festival is not just for the anglers. There will be plenty to do at the marina with bleachers set up for spectators and a salmon barbecue.
Visitors are encouraged to buy raffle tickets, with proceeds being spread around by local service clubs to local charities, such as the Bread of Life and Salvation Army. There is no charge for visitors and in total, there is more than $50,000 in cash and prizes to be won. Last year, Port Alberni resident Guy Desbien, who caught a 35.9-pound salmon, took home the grand prize.
