"Flights of stairs at regular five arch intervals gave access to the external upper floor ambulacrum which took spectators to the intermediate levels. A further flight of stairs gave access to the second floor and the highest sections of the Stadium. The terraces were split into two sectors (maeniana) and places were assigned according to social class- places nearest the arena were reserved for aristocrats and senators."
