I'm coming through.........

When I was doing a spot of pond maintenance a couple of weeks ago, I accidentally pulled out a dragonfly larva in a clump of weed. It was amazing to see how quickly the larva orientated itself to crawl straight back towards and into the water. Fortunately my camera was handy to grab a few photos.

Thanks to David (tarboat) for helping with the identification. Neither of us can be 100% certain because a key identification feature can't be seen. However, looking at the original of the photo below, the length of the spine on the end-but-one segment of the abdomen suggests to us that it is a Brown Hawker dragonfly (Southern Hawker is the other main possibility).

One morning soon, this larva will emerge, climb the stem of a reed and metamorphose into the flying adult we are all much more familiar with.
