Yangon (Burma) - A Thanaka princess

Thanaka is one of the fundamental ingredients of Burmese identity. Harvested from the bark of a tree, it is used by women and children alike as protection against the sun, make up, and cure for all types of skin ailments. Everyone wears it a different way, carefully applied on the cheeks or under the eyes, or playfully used to create all types of shapes and designs.
