03/09/2010 Newark DE: 03/09/2010 Newark DE: Delaware opens its home opener at newly renovated Delaware Field on Tuesday when the Blue Hens hosted UMBC in a doubleheader, UMBC Takes Opener Beating Delaware, 6-5 in 10 Innings.
The Retrievers won their ninth straight game Improving to 9-1 on the season, Delaware has now lost nine straight and is 2-12 on the year. The Hen's current deterioration is their longest 12-game losing streak since the 1991 season.
UMBC struck first in the top of the third inning as Lynn Probonis led off with a single to left field and scored on a two-out single to left by Malorie Weller, Delaware tried to get something started in the fourth Inning, But Stephanie Weigman wouldn't have any of it, facing Amanda Stacevicz who popped up to the short stop, Rachel Jones grounded out to second base and Gina Knutson popped up to second base leaving two women on base.
In the Sixth Inning The Blue Hens make a run Amanda Stacevicz and Shanette White each singled to left field, Gina Knutson hits a triple to right field, bring home two runners to tie the game at 2-2.
However with one out in the 10th inning second baseman Lauren Brummell clobber a home run over the right field fence, notwithstanding UMBC reliever Amanda Fefel retired the the lady Blue Hens in order during the bottom of the inning to escape Delaware field with the win
UMBC will return home to face George Washington in a Double Header, while Delaware returns to action march 17th when they face the Temple Owls in a doubleheader next Wednesday.
