Spire over Bury

St John, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

 

One of the half dozen highest Anglo-catholic churches in East Anglia. Actually built as long ago as 1841, it was progressively ritualised over the following decades.

 

Despite the presence of the new mock-medieval tower on the Anglican cathedral half a mile off, the stately brick tower of St John remains the most elegant landmark over the town.
