2017 Aug. 21 ~ The Diamond Ring - total solar eclipse

Photographed from state highway 71, Sioux County, 42 km north of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, U.S.A. (latitude 42.27° N. | longitude 103.77° W.)

This photo is part of my solar eclipse album, which you can see here:

In this combined view, a thin sliver of uneclipsed Sun appears with the Moon surrounded by the Sun's inner corona, in an effect known as the "diamond ring". The frame on the left was captured seconds before the start of the total phase of the eclipse, at 11.51 MDT. The frame at the right is just after the end of the total phase, about 2 minutes 50 seconds later. From our location, the total phase of the eclipse lasted 2 minutes, 30 seconds.
