The Battle Above The Clouds

Point Park - Chattanooga, TN.

This canon rests atop Lookout Mountain overlooking Chattanooga. It was a Confederate position during the Civil War's "Battle Above The Clouds."

The Federal Army of the Cumberland following its defeat at Chickamauga, GA retreated back to Chattanooga. The Confederates took up positions around Chattanooga at places like Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain. The supply lines to the Federal troops were cut off. The Confederates were going to starve them into submission.

Understanding the plight of the Army of the Cumberland as being desperate, reenforcements were sent to Chattanooga as it would be necessary to attack the Confederates on the mountains and drive them away from the supply lines.

There were four battles in all the prize being Chattanooga and the gateway to the deep South. A thick fog descended on the battlefield the day the Federal forces scaled the mountain from Lookout Valley. In the end, the Federal forces with their overwhelming strength in numbers prevailed and drove the Confederates off Lookout Mountain. With Chattanooga now securely in Federal controle their sights were set for the next big prize: Atlanta.
