Dehydrated American Infantryman
March 15, 2002
Shah-i-Kot Valley, Afghanistan
High in the mountains east of Gardez, a dehydrated American infantryman receives trail-side intravenous therapy from U.S. Army field medics as soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI) Battle Group trudge by. This scene is common here, at 3,000 metres above sea level, where heavily laden troops suffer from lack of oxygen as well as lack of fluids.
These soldiers were engaged in Operation ANACONDA, the Canadian Army's first combat mission since the Korean War. The 3 PPCLI Battle Group was deployed in Afghanistan on Operation APOLLO, Canada's military contribution to the international campaign against terrorism.
