2025 06 24 The Mount and Paties Hill.

Our three heroes met at Carlops determined to beat the jinx of The Mount. We had failed twice before for various reasons but this time the forecast was reasonable and we saw no reason to fail. The forecasters were wrong. There was almost continuous rain most of the way round accompanied with winds that were strong at times and even stronger at other times. There was, however, a little sunshine as we reached Carlops on the way back. The route went up the left bank of the North Esk to Fairliehope then up over Fairliehope Hill to The Mount where we did not stop long. We then went down to the North Esk Reservoir followed by the long and steep haul up the track on the far side. We then climbed Patie's Hill in winds that threatened to blow us off our feet before following the ridge down back to the path we started out on.We saw a brown and rather damp looking hare but there were few birds around although the sky larks were attempting to sing and we heard and indeed saw several curlews. The expected flowers were in bloom and we were pleased to see cloudberries with berries near the summot of The Mount. Bruce found a common spotted orchid.
It was a good, if surprisingly strenuous walk, and we beat the jinx.
4.9 Miles in 2 hours 30 mins climbing about 1500ft

We had an excellent lunch at the Flotterstone with very pleasant service
