Highway Of The Damned
Having survived a turtle attack, and with just minutes of daylight left, we finally get to the west portal of the Sideling Hill Tunnel on the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike.
The tunnel was completed in 1940 and abandoned in 1968, when the Turnpike Commission concluded it would be cheaper to realign this stretch of turnpike than to bore a second tunnel alongside this one to provide four-lane travel.
I say it was completed in 1940, not built in 1940, because it was actually started in the 1880s, as part of the South Pennsylvania Railroad. The railroad was never completed, due to cost overruns, and the tunnel itself was never finished after several workers were killed in blasts. (Or so I read on Wikipedia.) The Turnpike Commission took over the railroad right of way in 1938, paved it over, finished the tunnel, and opened the road to traffic in 1940.
