Point Hicks

The obelisk on Point Hicks seems to be about the only place in the area you can get a mobile phone signal, which is why the woman, who was staying in one of the holiday cottages there, is sat at its base.

The obelisk itself commemorates the first sightng of the Australian mainland by Captain Cook's expedition in 1770. It's named after the midshipman that spotted it. It also marks the boundary between the Tasman Sea (to the left, and the body of water between Australia and New Zealand) and the Bass Strait (to the right, and the body of water between the Australian Mainland and Tasmania).
